Precision Devices Case Study – EM Acoustics’ quake subwoofer
Precision Devices’ commitment to the utmost in drive unit technology is ideally demonstrated by the EM Acoustics Quake subwoofer – one of the most powerful single-driver subwoofers available today.

At the core of the sizable enclosure sits a massive PD drive unit, eighteen inches in diameter with a motor structure based around a five-inch voice coil and eleven-inch ceramic magnet. The performance of the Quake sub is then derived from an exponential/hyperbolic horn flare nearly nine feet in length – one of the longest commercially available for an 18” driver.

EM Acoustics’ Director of R&D Ed Kinsella explains “The Quake subs were originally designed for a client in Las Vegas, who gave us a very demanding design brief. Essentially he wanted the full works – flat response 35Hz to 200Hz, very high SPL, superior transient response and in the most compact package available. We realised a horn was the only way to go, and turned to PD for the ultimate in drive unit technology. What we’ve ended up with is an enclosure that stays flat to 35Hz even using only one sub (or 27Hz with four in a stack) thanks to the horn, but because of the superior motor strength of the PD driver and the careful design of the flare, we still get the transient response and a flat frequency response to over 200Hz.”

Quake subs have been providing “astonishing” low-end for events up and down the country over the past few months, such as the Tidy Weekender 5 in Wales and the recent Peter Andre UK tour. More information is available at www.emacoustics.co.uk or by contacting EM Acoustics on +44 (0) 1483 421200.
